Should I go deep, go wide or just GO!?

No, I am not referring to your favorite wide receiver in your fantasy football league. Rather, this question refers to your career goals.  The short answer is… just GO! I was listening to an audiobook on my walk with the dog (Risk/Reward by Anne Kreamer) and this concept of going deep, meaning doing only one thing your entire career (teacher, lawyer, accountant) versus going wide, and doing a variety of things, intrigues me. They say going wide is a competitive advantage; based on a 2014 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Younger workers who sampled more occupations (job-hopping) to find the most satisfying, correlated with higher incomes because of finding their true calling. I’d say I did both.  I worked for the same company for 27 years (yes, just one) but basically did every business function within the company up to Project and Program Management.  So I’m living proof that you don’t necessarily have to keep switching companies to get the depth you are looking for.
  1. Be all-in – grow and learn every day
  2. One Size Does not Fit All
  3. Choices are not final
Survey in book with JWT, 80% said uncomfortable when faced with work related ambiguity afraid, confused or exhausted – anxious, drained, uninspired If we can offer people the opportunity to gain new experience within the company, we can actually keep these people instead of having them leave to get that experience elsewhere.
