Words matter. I think that’s why referring to my target client as executive women in “male-dominated” industries has always bothered me. It feels like referring to Engineering and Construction as dominated by males continues to make it a self fulfilling prophecy. But what if we want to change that narrative? One of my passions is encouraging women to enter the STEM fields – head first, full of confidence and self-worth, knowing they can do anything they put their mind to 💪🏻
Interestingly, dominate is a verb in the past tense. So I say, let’s leave it in the PAST! Recently, when setting up my new website, I chose to start referring to it as male-saturated industries which, by definition, means to cause (something) to become thoroughly soaked such that NO MORE can be absorbed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we should exclude anyone. However, when our daughters and granddaughters continue to hear that the job that they aspire to, is in a “male-dominated” industry, how inclined will they be to apply?
